The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra continues its 2009+2010 season with White Nights,
the second stop on our musical tour around the world (and beyond).
Be sure to pack your ushanka as we feature music from
Scandanavia and Russia. Our musical travelogue begins with modern
Finnish composer Einojuhani
Rautavaara's 1972 work Cantus arcticus, an intriguing
"Concerto for Birds and Orchestra" in which the PSO accompanies
recordings of birdsong from the Artic Circle of northern Finland. Next
we move to Norway for Edvard
Grieg's Piano Concerto of 1868, featuring guest
soloist Nicholas Roth in a piece reminiscent of traditional
Norwegian folk music. Finally, we conclude our tour with a move to St.
Petersburg for Pyotr
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5.
