For the final performance of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra's 2009+2010 season, our musical journey travels
Our World and Beyond with guest conductor Thomas Heuser.
We begin earthbound, with modern American composer John
Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine. A minimalist masterpiece
composed in 1986 for the Great Woods Festival in Mansfield,
Massachusetts, this "joyfully exuberant" piece with increasingly layered
textures and constantly building climax serves as the perfect countdown
for our launch into the great beyond. Once in orbit we survey the
heavens featuring an original multimedia projection by Andrew C. Dolph
with Gustav Holst's
masterwork The Planets. Premiered in 1918, the orchestral
suite presents seven movements each representing a planet in our solar
system: Mars, the Bringer of War; Venus, the Bringer of Peace; Mercury,
the Winged Messenger; Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity; Saturn, the
Bringer of Old Age; Uranus, the Magician; Neptune, the Mystic.
