Maurice Ravel worked on his piano trio for six years before finishing it in a whirlwind in preparation for enlisting in the French army during World War 1. It is still considered a pinnacle of the 20th century piano trio literature. Works by Frank Bridge, masterpieces written at the same time across the Channel from an avowed pacifist, offer a different point of view.
